Last week Marco Freccero told us why he prefers to write short stories and not novels. And from there I got the idea for this post, not because I prefer them to novels, but because I like writing them anyway. Some time ago I talked about the importance of publishing stories on the blog : for an author they are a quick way to make themselves known, to create an initial audience and receive constructive criticism. Since I started publishing my stories, first in some literary forums and then here on the blog, my writing has improved. I haven't always agreed with the criticism I've received, but that's normal. Sometimes they were different visions, personal choices, but often they were criticisms that showed gaps in the story. But here today we have to talk about the reasons that can push an author to write short stories. The oldest form of storytelling The story was born before the novel.
The man began to tell a long time ago. Cave paintings and rock engravings were the first forms of narration , they were the stories of what happened in those remote eras. We can't help but tell. Storytelling is part of our species. Storytelling is one of many forms of communication. Indeed, perhaps we can say that we cannot communicate without telling. The story, therefore, is our way of speaking, it is the expression of our language. When we tell stories, we are alive, because the story is a sort of textual photograph of the Special Data moments of our life. The great authors of short stories I can't name them all, but I can name a few, a short list of my favorite authors. Edgar Allan Poe : Poe's stories are too often known according to various classifications, such as “Grotesque and Serious Tales”, “Stories of Horror” and so on. But these are only limited categories. In reality, Poe's stories are much more.
Some are as short as they are deep. In short, he managed to enter the sick soul of man, laying it bare. Howard Phillips Lovecraft : His horror was more… material than Poe's. Lovecraft used the short story to visualize the nightmare. To show the unknown sides of reality. Arthur Conan Doyle : Well, here we're talking about the tales of Sherlock Holmes' investigations. His adventures have only been fictionalized 4 times, but the rest of the stories are short stories. Philip K. Dick : one of the greatest science fiction authors. So far I have only read a few novels, but I recently purchased the 4 volumes which contain all of his stories from 1947 to 1981. Giovannino Guareschi : who doesn't remember Don Camillo? Some of the character's novels were nothing more than episodes, stories, united by a common thread. And then there are all the stories of Mondo Candido and many others.
